Touch Design Group are delighted to have played a central part in 6a architects being awarded the 2017 Arnold Laver Gold Wood Award, winner of winners, for the Coastal House project. Touch Design Group were commissioned as the main joinery company to manufacture and fit multiple elements including the staircase, kitchen, library, wall panelling, vanity units, dressing room and built-in wardrobes.

Coastal House is an early twentieth century family home sitting on a cliff top with extensive views of the sea. Originally raised on a plinth above a basement, the house has been transformed by stripping it back to its stone walls and lowering the ground floor to the level of the ground outside. This has increased the size of the rooms and created tall, elongated openings to the outside.

A series of oak beams make up the exposed primary structure of the building and have enabled the internal spaces to be completely reconfigured. Three floors on the north end of the house connect to two floors on the south. Each space has a distinct volume and ceiling height, with the central stair offering clear views through the whole house. Tapered oak verticals are used as supports throughout, including primary drawing room columns, external veranda posts and the stair spindles.

David Crosby, director at Touch Design Group said: “We are so pleased that 6a architects have been awarded this accolade, one of the top awards in our field. We thoroughly enjoyed working with them on this project; being alongside such a thoughtful and forward-thinking team has helped us to further stretch and strengthen our skills. The award has clearly recognised the incredible quality of all elements of this project from design and craftsmanship through to finish and liveability.”

Working in collaboration with architects, designers and private clients, Touch Design Group’s tailored approach provides exceptional levels of continuity and communication throughout all stages of the project.

The client on this project, commented on working with Touch Design Group: “We have enjoyed working with them on more than one project and can’t recommend them highly enough: long and careful attention to both quality and detail. Nothing too much and always a solution. A highly professional team.”
